Redmond
sits on a flat plateau on the eastern side of Oregon's Cascade Mountain Range, right at the western edge of Oregon's High Desert region. This location is considered the "geographical heart of Central Oregon" and has easy access to unlimited recreational possibilities. A lovely community and the county seat for Deschutes County, Redmond's climate is semi-arid, which means plenty of sunshine with four distinct seasons of the year. Redmond is just minutes from the Deschutes River, the Cascade Mountains and several beautiful lakes. Fishing is a favorite sport in the area, but you will also find mountain climbing, hiking and backpacking, swimming, boating, canoeing, rafting, camping and birdwatching. Dramatic Smith Rock State Park is just north of Redmond, and there are miles of hiking trails that follow the Crooked River up the canyon walls to the top of ridges with breathtaking vistas of the mountains and valleys below. Redmond is also near the Three Sisters Wilderness Area, the Deschutes National Forest and the Cove Palisades State Park. Alpine skiing and cross-country skiing are popular sports for those visiting Redmond in the wintertime. With so much to do, the only problem is deciding how to spend your time.

Central Oregon has a varied climate, depending on elevation and proximity to the mountains. In general, you can expect a high desert climate with lots of sunshine and low humidity. The days are usually sunny and clear with cool nights year round, but each region may vary slightly. Most areas of central Oregon see over 300 days of sunshine each year. Central Oregon's temperatures are warm in summer and cool in winter, and precipitation can come in the form of rain, sleet, hail or snow, but is generally less than twelve inches per year. If it snows, it is usually between Thanksgiving and February, and often melts off during the day due to the high levels of sunshine. Surface winds prevail out of the south and southeast from October to February, then from west to northwest in the remaining months. Wind speeds average from 5 to 7 mph most months.
