Prineville
is located in the high desert region of Crook County, northeast of Bend and east of Redmond along Highway 126. It is approximately 3 hours from Portland, Salem and Eugene. Prineville is the oldest community in Central Oregon, established in 1868. Visitors to this pristine town will discover a myriad of things to do. There are eleven parks that span over 100 acres in the Crook County Parks and Recreation District. A hiking/biking path runs east-west, spanning 2.5 miles through the center of town and through Ochoco Creek Park. The Prineville Reservoir State Park offers boating, swimming, fishing, camping and picnicking and Ochoco Reservoir has additional fishing and camping. The Lower Crooked River, which has been designated a National Wild and Scenic River is just minutes from Prineville. Central Oregon is a rockhounding paradise and Prineville boasts the nickname of "Rockhound Capital of the United States." The Prineville Chamber of Commerce offers visitors a complimentary Rockhound Map that is a guide to the rockhounding sites, giving road directions using landmarks, identifying and showing the local rock materials found at each site. There are also safety tips and historic and geologic information included in the map. Golf is also available at the Meadow Lakes public green and the Prineville Golf & Country Club offers private memberships. The town of Prineville is home to an eclectic group of antique stores and art galleries and dining is everything from steaks and American home-style cooking to Chinese and Mexican.

Central Oregon has a varied climate, depending on elevation and proximity to the mountains. In general, you can expect a high desert climate with lots of sunshine and low humidity. The days are usually sunny and clear with cool nights year round, but each region may vary slightly. Most areas of central Oregon see over 300 days of sunshine each year. Central Oregon's temperatures are warm in summer and cool in winter, and precipitation can come in the form of rain, sleet, hail or snow, but is generally less than twelve inches per year. If it snows, it is usually between Thanksgiving and February, and often melts off during the day due to the high levels of sunshine. Surface winds prevail out of the south and southeast from October to February, then from west to northwest in the remaining months. Wind speeds average from 5 to 7 mph most months.
