North-Bend
is located on the north end of a peninsula formed by the great bend in the Coos River as it flows into the Pacific Ocean. The city of North Bend, along with the neighboring towns of Coos Bay and Charleston form what is known as "Oregon's Bay Area." The area thrives on tourism, lumber and commercial fisheries, and is also the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. North Bend has a unique location, situated between the dramatic Pacific Ocean and the deep inland forests. There is a lot of natural beauty in the area, including massive sand dunes, beaches and tidepools, lakes, bays, meadows and streams. The town of North Bend dates back to the mid 1800s, when there were only a few houses and sawmills located here, but by the early 1900s, tourists started arriving to enjoy the beautiful beaches and gorgeous sunsets along Coos Bay. Today North Bend has a population of 9,600 and offers visitors a variety of shopping, a recreational boat ramp, several beautiful parks and hiking trails and an Olympic size indoor swimming pool. Nearby area attractions include Cape Arago State Park and the Cape Arago Lighthouse, Bastendorff Beach County Park, the Seven Devils State Recreation Site, the Umpqua River Lighthouse and the Coquille River Lighthouse. Clamming, crabbing, rockhounding and whale watching are among the more unique activities to enjoy while visiting the North Bend area.

The South Central Coast of Oregon enjoys a mild climate with only rare occurrences of severe weather such as thunderstorms, tornadoes or hailstorms. The most important geographic feature that affects the climate is the Pacific Ocean, which makes up the western border of the state. Most of the storm systems moving across Oregon have been greatly modified by traveling over the ocean. As a result, winter minimum and summer maximum temperatures on the Oregon coast are also moderate. The coastal region does, however, receive an abundant amount of rainfall much of the year, resulting in occasional flooding along coastal streams. This also accounts for the rich pastures and farmland along the Oregon coast. The average annual snowfall in the region is only one to three inches, and many years there is no measurable amount.
