Haines
is a small town located in northeastern Oregon along "old" Highway 30 on the banks of the Powder River between Baker City and North Powder. With an interesting history, the town of Haines began as part of the farmland owned by Israel David Haines. In 1884, after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, Haines platted out a portion of his property for a township. Soon a small train depot was on the site, as well as a small loading platform for the Oregon Navigation & Railroad Company. A thriving town grew around the railroad and added mining, timber and agriculture to its' local economy. The town of Haines became known as "The Biggest Little City in Oregon." Attractions in this small town include an annual "Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration & Rodeo, which includes a parade, cowboy breakfast, "Barbecue in the City," activities for kids and fireworks. The other main attraction in this small town is the Eastern Oregon Museum, "On the Old Oregon Trail." The museum holds over 10,000 nostalgic items, and includes cowboy memorabilia, a one room schoolhouse, old dolls and toys, The Railroad Depot, The Carriage Wing, period clothing and more. From Haines, one can easily access the Elkhorn Drive Scenic Byway, a 106-mile loop of very scenic highway. Haines is not the type of place to go if you're looking for a lot of action and nightlife, but does make an interesting, old-fashioned vacation destination, especially for those interested in the Old West.

Haines Weather & Climate
Northeastern Oregon, near the Eagle Cap Wilderness area and Wallowa Lake, is encircled by mountains that protect the valley from the more severe aspects of weather. The mountains also prevent moisture from reaching the valley, so it has a pretty dry climate. Summers are warm and pleasant with low humidity. Most of the precipitation in the area occurs in spring and fall. Heavy snowfall in the high mountains produces snow packs that remain all year long on the higher peaks. Light snow can be expected in the valley regions from late November to early April. January is usually the coldest month and July is the hottest. Precipitation varies from just over seven inches in the valley up to 60 inches in the mountains.
